Manufacturing

Modern cigarette tobaccos are an industrial product. Relatively simple machinery is used for processing the leaf tobacco that is in the finished product, whereas production and packing are carried out on technically advanced high-speed machines.

Leaf Tobacco
The main types of leaf tobacco are Virginia, Burley and Oriental.

Each leaf type has a number of tobacco grades that refer to the tobacco leaf's position on the plant. This is of vital importance to the taste and quality.

Villiger Stokkebye buys its leaf tobaccos in North and South America, Africa and the Middle East.

Cultivation
Cultivation of Virginia, Burley and Oriental starts in a seed-bed. The seedlings are looked after for about six weeks until they have four leaves. Then the seed-bed is watered heavily so that the plants can be removed without damaging the roots. After this the tobacco is planted in the field. When the tobacco is ripe it is harvested either through priming or stalk-cutting. Priming means that every single leaf is broken off when ripe. Stalk-cutting means that the whole plant is cut down.

Uniform Quality
Villiger Stokkebye only buys top quality, ripe tobacco from the best regions. Our suppliers buy the quality we want directly from the farmer or at tobacco auctions. The leaf tobacco is packed in cases and stored for ageing in a warehouse for up to three years. The ageing makes the taste smoother.

The quality of tobacco varies according to the weather in the growing season - like any other natural product. But for Villiger Stokkebye International, the quality of tobacco must be identical from one year to the next. To maintain the same top quality in our tobaccos we care-fully select the right tobaccos. In the country of origin the tobaccos are blended in order to attain uniform quality for the region and tobacco type. Later these blended tobaccos will be mixed with several others to make, for instance, a can of Norwegian Shag tobacco.

Blending and Conditioning
When we receive the leaf tobacco it is very dry and fragile. In order to make the tobacco supple enough for handling the tobacco is moistened in rotating cylinders where the tobacco is slowly and gently carried through water and steam. Before conditioning the individual tobacco grades are weighed out according to Peter Stokkebye's own recipes.

Burley tobacco undergoes a special process called casing before it is mixed with the Virginia and Oriental tobaccos. The casing is made of liquorice, cocoa, maple syrup and chocolate; these substances are boiled in water and then added to the tobacco.

Cutting and Drying
From the blending silos the tobacco blend is brought to the cutting machines where the tobacco is cut to a carefully specified width which ensures the tobaccos will roll or tube perfectly later.

Top Flavour
The addition of top flavour (aromatics) is the last step before the tobacco is packaged, and is sprayed onto the tobacco in rotating cylinders. Top flavour makes the taste smooth -and is unique to each tobacco blend and to every single brand. Consequently, the recipe is a trade secret.
